Albert Einstein

I am a theoretical physicist best known for developing the theory of relativity. I also made important contributions to quantum theory, and my mass–energy formula E = mc2 has been called the world's most famous equation.

The résumé read

Experience

  1. With Podolsky and Rosen I called quantum theory incomplete

    Technology

In 1935, with Boris Podolsky and Nathan Rosen, I published the EPR thought experiment: two entangled particles whose properties can be predicted at a distance. We concluded quantum theory does not give a complete description of reality.

  2. A no-moving-parts refrigerator, co-invented with Szilárd

    Technology

In 1926 my former student Leó Szilárd and I co-invented the Einstein refrigerator, patented in 1930 — engineering beyond my physics research. It was an absorption refrigerator, revolutionary technology then for having no moving parts and running only on heat.

  3. I held that quantum randomness hides a deeper order

    Philosophy

I helped found quantum theory, yet I was skeptical that its randomness was fundamental rather than the result of an underlying determinism. Until the end of my life I maintained that quantum mechanics was incomplete.

  4. I extended Bose's statistics and predicted a condensate

    Technology

In 1924 I received Satyendra Nath Bose's statistical model of light as a gas of indistinguishable particles. I saw it applied to atoms too, translated and submitted his paper, and published my own research predicting the Bose–Einstein condensate.

  5. My 1917 stimulated emission paper, the laser's basis

    Technology

In 1917 I published a physics research article in Physikalische Zeitschrift proposing stimulated emission. It showed atomic transitions follow simple statistical laws, and it is the physical process that makes maser and laser technology possible.

  1. I dropped my static universe when Hubble's galaxies receded

    Technology

In 1917 my research applied general relativity to the structure of the universe as a whole, founding a static model. After Hubble's 1929 discovery that galaxies recede, I abandoned it for dynamic models and discarded the cosmological constant.

  2. I predicted gravitational waves a century before LIGO

    Technology

In 1916 I predicted gravitational waves: ripples in spacetime curvature that carry energy away from their source. They are possible because gravity in general relativity propagates at a finite speed, unlike in Newton's theory.

  • The one experiment I conceived, built and published myself

    Technology

In 1915, with Wander Johannes de Haas, I published two research papers claiming the first experimental observation that a change in a body's magnetic moment makes it rotate. This experimental physics showed magnetization comes from aligned electron angular momenta.

  • I taught physics from Bern to a chair at the ETH Zurich

    Learning

In 1908 I took a junior teaching position at the University of Bern. A 1909 lecture on relativistic electrodynamics won me an associate professorship in Zurich, and in July 1912 I returned to the ETH Zurich to a chair in theoretical physics.

  • I recast gravity as the warping of spacetime

    Technology

Between 1907 and 1915 I developed general relativity, in which the attraction between masses results from their warping of spacetime. My prediction that gravity bends light was confirmed by Eddington's 1919 eclipse observations.

  • My four 1905 papers on space, time and matter

    Work

In 1905 I published four research papers in Annalen der Physik — on the photoelectric effect, Brownian motion, special relativity and E = mc2. Together they contributed substantially to the foundation of modern physics as a science.

  • I reconciled Maxwell with mechanics, dropped the aether

    Technology

My research paper "On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies" resolved the conflict between Maxwell's equations and Newtonian mechanics by changing the laws of mechanics. It became the special theory of relativity, the physics that gave us E = mc2.
