I am a mathematician, electrical engineer, computer scientist, cryptographer and inventor. My research turned switching circuits into logic and communication into a mathematical science of information.
I treat engineering problems as questions of science: once information can be measured, it can be designed for.
My work ran from MIT to Bell Labs and back to MIT: logic circuits, wartime cryptography, information theory, and early research on machines that learn and play chess.
