I built the Hogarth Press on a dining room table
1917 — 1938
Situation
Small presses of the time specialised in expensive artisanal reprints; publishing my first novel through an outside house had been an ordeal. We set out to print new writing and art instead.
Action
In 1917 Leonard and I set up a hand press at Hogarth House and turned it into a publisher of living avant-garde literature, art and translation — Mansfield, Eliot, Forster, Russian works and the first complete Freud in English.
Outcome
Owning the press gave me creative independence: no outside gatekeeper between my experimental literature and its readers.
